The full name of PEMFC is Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC), in which the proton exchange membrane is the electrolyte of PEMFC, which plays the roles of conducting hydrogen ions, isolating the fuel and oxidizer, and blocking the electrons, and it is the most core component of PEMFC. the higher power density of PEMFC as compared with other fuel cells is a result of the excellent performance of proton membrane.
For proton exchange membrane, there are generally the following requirements:
1)Good thermal stability and mechanical strength;
2)High proton conductivity to ensure low enough ohmic resistance to increase current density;
3)low fuel permeability to reduce fuel penetration from the anode side to the cathode side to react directly with the oxidizer, preventing unnecessary loss of fuel and generation of localized overheating;
4) High chemical stability, able to maintain sufficient stability in the reducing atmosphere, oxidizing atmosphere and acidic and alkaline conditions, preventing membrane degradation and failure in the reducing atmosphere, oxidizing atmosphere, acidic and alkaline conditions.
